I've never been a prolific poster or blogger, but I find myself here at LiveJournal very rarely.
If you reallllllllly want to keep up with me, and you know you do, you can find me posting slightly more frequently on my site at edmarsh dot (.) com. That domain became available earlier this year, and I jumped on it. The intention was to have that as a "professional" slash career site, but instead became a blog. so, check it out, and thanks for reading all this time.

i just found out i don't have the Friday after Thanksgiving off. that's just low. we only get two weeks of vacation to begin with, and now i have to take off friday, and potentially Xmas Eve day, just to get what the rest of the world country already has off?
lame.

| War on... something! |
[19 Nov 2007|02:55pm] |
Presidential un-hopeful Ed Marsh (UltraLiberal-NJ) today unleashed a tirade against the cyclone that killed more than 3,000 Bangladeshis this past week. "If a cyclone can kill more people than terrorists did on Sept. 11, 2001, aren't we fighting the wrong war?", Marsh exclaimed to absolutely no one on his morning commute to New York City.
"America's thoughts are with the Bangladeshi people today, for as long as the story comes up on iGoogle. We must band together to end cyclones in our time."
"This horrible event reminds me of a college friend I had. He was partial Bangladeshi, and in a drunken fit, another friend saluted him with the Bangladeshi Anthem: Oh Bangladesh, Oh Bangladesh You border on the Bay of Bengal Your religion is Muslim, and your currency's the Taka.
Oh Bangladesh, Oh Bangladesh You are a very poor country, Your land is mostly river deltas, and your capital is Dhaka."
"Now that I think about it", Marsh notes, "perhaps that was made up in a drunken fit. But nonetheless, we must help these impoverished people, and fight Cyclone Terrorism, no matter the costs involved. Our meteorologists stand ready, and our proud tornado hunters are ready to take their makeshift vehicles abroad to ensure that cyclones stay in another part of the world."

| Beer night |
[04 Oct 2007|11:03am] |
S was going to meet her mom, so i decided to spend some quality time in the City. since it's been so nice out, i strolled down to the Heartland Brewery on South Street. it's a touristy area, but pretty dead at 6 on a wednesday. i sat outside and enjoyed their Oktoberfest lager, which was surprisingly good.
i then headed uptown to the Blind Tiger, my favorite all-time beer bar. First up was the He'Brew Lenny's R.I.P.A, an awesome, complex beer. and now i find out it's 10% ABV...
next was Sierra Nevada's 20th St Green Hop Ale. it was delicious. Sierra's been on a roll lately with their Anniversary Ale, and this hoppy ale was a treat.
third up was the best of the night. Bear Republic's Racer 5 was just incredible. it was like drinking raw hops. citrusy, fruity, and god just plain amazing.
the final beverage of the evening was local favorite Brooklyn Brewery's Schneider Weiss. Frankly, i don't remember a thing about this beer; possibly due to the 10% He'brew.
Thankfully, despite a can of Beck's on the train ride home, i am not hungover today.

[22 Sep 2007|01:03am] |
after tonight's football game at which the band played, i went out to TGIFridays. i don't like chain restaurants, especially when there's so much to offer in this area, but it's where everyone wanted to go. thankfully, they had brooklyn lager on tap.
here comes a digression:
this week illustrated why this job can be so incredibly frustrating. (i'm not going to go into details, in case someone googles me and denies me a job because i wrote bad stuff about an employer, or someone from said employer happens to find this. isn't it terrible that we can't fully express ourselves?) there are many forces that work against you - illnesses, other activities/sports, overtime games, train delays, the weather, homework, lateness, traffic; you name it. but then you have a frustrating rehearsal, followed by a really awesome rehearsal, followed by a performance that was close to embarassing. it's an emotional rollercoaster, and why i understand that teachers and students get so many days off.
but i digress.
i got to the restaurant late; i was dropped off at home to change and get my car. everyone ordered before i got there. the food comes out, and the guy next to me is served a bacon cheeseburger with fried provolone. two types of meat, two cheeses (one fried!), all on a sesame seed bun. with his second large coke, no ice. at midnight.
things that make you go hmm.

[19 Sep 2007|09:39am] |
so apparently it's been some time since i've dropped in. life changes, blogs die, or at least become less important. so, in a nutshell, a rather large nutshell, say a filbert:
i'd still hit Britney.
S and I moved in together in July. our apartment is still a disaster, but we're getting along very well.
we bought a share in a community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm. it is the best veggies i've ever had. tomatoes taste like tomatoes. the red leaf lettuce is gorgeous and bright. we've gotten to sample some things we've never had before. it's a joy.
the job for which i was consulting went to a permanent position in June. i'm happy, well, as happy as you can be as a tech writer. i'm the only one in the company, and that is cool.
band's band. it's the frustrating, repetitive part of the season. the fucko with whom i never got along resigned, so my stress level in that regard is much less.
i'm looking at new cars.
saw The Police at Giants Stadium. what a treat that was.
S and I went to Road America in Wisconsin. for a racing weekend. yeah, she's a keeper.
then i came home and taught a week of band camp with pneumonia. yeah, that was awesome.
i've gotten into minus the bear. great band. their new album kicks ass.
i started making my own beer recipes. the two IPAs i've made so far have been excellent. the second one didn't carbonate, but still tastes awesome. i have a porter in secondary fermentation that i'm really looking forward to.
our Cacophony show in June was awesome.
i think that's it.

i am 20-16 today.
my three closest friends seem to have forgotten about it.
The Forn is one of the biggest douchebags ever to walk the planet.
i'm on a three month contract writing position uptown - 52nd and Lex. i really like it, and it seems to be a good fit, other than the longer commute, and the tie-wearing requirement. the subway is a lot more of a pain in the ass when you need it daily. there's a good chance of it becoming a permanent position, and i will most likely accept it, providing we can accommodate my band responsibilities. it's still odd being uptown, though. i don't feel like i fit in this, moneyed, area.
i did miss the hell out of the City. i realized this, once again, last Thursday. we had a belated holiday party, at Todd English's remarkable
English is Italian. afterwards, on the walk back to Port Authority, i stopped in the middle of Park Ave. to take shots of the illuminated Grand Central Station.

| My January, 2007 Champ Car Preview |
[04 Jan 2007|12:06am] |
i spent almost two hours revising this. what's wrong with me.
I can't begrudge A.J. Allmendinger, really. if i were 24 years old, unceremoniously dumped by my owner (i don't know the story, i just know there are two sides to every one of them...) just engaged, and someone offered me six times my current salary, i'd say where do i sign, too.
hell, i told myself i'd never wear a tie again, but yet, here i am at a new job where ties are required, and that's for significantly less than six times my previous salary.
i was a big fan of AJ - who the hell else would stand up in front of their hero (Paul effin' Tracy) and several hundred rabid champ car fans at Road America and tell AJ that if he left for NASCAR, i'd cry. but i won't watch him in NASCAR - i just don't watch NASCAR; i'm just not that interested in ovals. that, more than (F!)Tony George, is why i won't watch the IRL.
ok, that's just not true. i hate (F)Tony (doesn't deserve boldface) George for what he's done to the series that i've loved since they raced in the Meadowlands. but that's another blog...
it's just a shame we couldn't retain the guy who brought some of the biggest excitement (and press) of the season.
i also like Sebastien Bourdais, a lot. i'm proud to wear my new blue and yellow threepeat hat on the NY subway. the guy's just fast. he reminds me of Juan Pablo Montoya. i always respected Montoya because he is a phenomenal racer (note: not driver), but i never liked him personally. i sincerely hope he does well in cabs, but i won't watch him, either.
Seb (OMG not SEABASS. give the man some respect!) sincerely deserves to be in Formula 1, and all i'm going to say about his Red Bull test is that it's curious he keeps saying he's with Newman Haas (OMG not HASS) for 2007 and that Scuderia Toro Rosso (aka Red Bull Lite) hasn't announced their driver lineup. Sebastien gets a bad rap, but he was the guy who was trying to put my 1/18 scale McDonald's Lola-Cosworth back in the box after he signed it. (BTW, thanks man).
On the new DP01 - it's gorgeous even without the women surrounding it.
i can't believe there's people on CCF (you know who you are) who complain because it's not any lighter than the Lola. In the real world, parts are heavier than you expect, things get revised. those of you who feel that CC lied to you should maybe put your efforts into Bigger Liars That Run The Free World.
Silly Season - i will be pissed - Pissed - if Oriol Servia doesn't have a ride, and not just because that means i won't be able to have him sign the 1/18 scale Gulfstream car i got for Xmas. he has stuck with ChampCar, and is a great personality. That, more than anything, is what CC needs. it's how NASCAR has succeeded - people know the drivers. market the drivers and the rest takes care of itself.
i don't like where PKV is going with their driver situation.
We all knew Katherine (can a girl racer with a British accent BE any hotter?) Legge was brought up a year too early, but she deserves another year before people say she doesn't belong. we also all know PKV Racing isn't where they should be, yet, and that's ok. RuSport (OMG not Sports) (Thanks for that fleece from the CARA charity auction!) has just done it more quickly. it happens. but, it's certainly (in my amateur yet opinionated opinion), not the drivers' fault.
and holy crap, was not knowing what was going on with Katherine's crash while i was sitting a few turns away at Road America scary. especially after watching so many vehicles go by - rescue crews, wreckers, cranes, golf carts. those were some eerie moments.
is there anyone on the planet who thought Nelson ("ha-ha!" Muntz) Phillipe would become the driver he is?
if Gerry (OMG is it Gerry or Jerry?!?) Forsythe only runs one car this year, i think that says a lot. say what you will about that league with Foyt's offspring who didn't inherit an iota of his talent - Danica (if she can't win with Andretti-Green she's toast) Patrick has a fully-funded ride. why isn't GoDaddy on our cars?
on the other hand, 2004 Indy 500 winner Buddy Rice sure went nowhere with that Forsythe chance, didn't he?
i'm excited to see 2006 Atlantic Champion Simon Pagenaud drive in the big cars. and GraHAM (F Bobby) Rahal. just announce the damn thing already.
Bruno (pa-seef-care) Junqueira isn't the same since his Indy crash. Sorry, dude. i think he's out of a ride for sure, and i don't really have a problem with that. he's a whiner (like Michael (waaaaaaahhhhhhh oooh honda money) Andretti and Nigel Mansell and Raul Boesel whiny), and not much of a personality.
Although i don't like him too too much, Alex (Boxes with Helmet) [ Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<span [...] roman, times, serif>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. i'd give <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ryan Briscoe</span> (County, Jr) another chance.
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Miscellaneous </span>the reason i started following Champ Car was because they were the only series in the world that raced on road courses, streets, and ovals. we need an oval, no matter the cost.
<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>i think there will be 18 cars on the grid this year, despite what everyone else says.
<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>i sincerely, and sadly, doubt <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cristiano</span> (the original Shorty) <span style="font-weight: bold;">da Matta </span>will ever race in Champ Car again.
The <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paul </span>(How many d's)<span style="font-weight: bold;"> Stoddart</span> story would be much better if he brought his own team, instead of poaching CTE-HVM (cinderella story of the season?) and "maybe" running a third car. however, it does bring the Minardi name and some F1 credibility.
there are few things as good as Race Director. There are far fewer things as good as hearing Paul Effin' Tracy talk to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Neil</span> Effin' <span style="font-weight: bold;">Micklewright</span> on Race Director.
</span></font><font size="3"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Driver i'd most like to see back in CC: </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Patrick Carpentier. </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">maybe it's because he's a drummer. he was always pretty cool.
Close second: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Michel </span>(hee-gone-tay)<span style="font-weight: bold;"> Jourdain, Jr.</span><br style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;" /></span> </font><font size="3"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;"> I'd like to have a photo of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paul</span> (does he own part of the series or doesn't he) <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gentilozzi</span>'s bald head right next to mine. that's about the only positive thing i have to say about RocketSports.
<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span></span></font><font size="3"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Dale Coyne</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;"> deserves something, anything.
</span></font><font size="3"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Mario Dominguez</span>: good for Mexico, outstayed his welcome.
what the hell happens when <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paul</span> (faster at 80 than i am at 35) <span style="font-weight: bold;">Newman </span>retires or kicks the bucket?
when the hell are we going to have a race in the New York tri-state area? can we please have it in East Rutherford, NJ again, so i can walk there?
the Phoenix race in December will get negative TV numbers. Stop. Competing. With. Football.
solidify the 2008 schedule in February, 2007. Please?
i'm very sorry to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Carl Russo</span> go. they just better keep it RuSport because, in addition to the aforementioned fleece, i bought a RuSport hat and polo and t-shirt at Road America.
</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;">Eric </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;">(Overhead at the Track rules!)</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;"> Gagnon</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;"> deserves a job with ChampCar. So does </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;">Tommy </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;">(recommended beer bars for me at Clevelend '04) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Kendall</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;">. they, like Servia, are personalities with which casual fans can relate. and they know their shit.
i think <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hinch</span> is getting the shaft. just keep him with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jeremy </span>(taller than J.Wil.)<span style="font-weight: bold;"> Shaaaaaw</span> on the international feed.
i've been holding on to my hollyhocks for way too long, and i'm not even sure what they are.
If CrackForum thinks <span style="font-weight: bold;">Robin Miller</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">David Phillips</span> are biased towards Champ Car, and CCF thinks they're biased against CC, doesn't that mean they're doing their jobs as journalists?
how many more years can <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jon Beekhuis</span> run up and down pit lane?
another 50 or 60, i hope.</span></font>

why is there such a big deal about "happy holidays"? why is no one offended by "season's greetings"?

| Why i don't like A1GP |
[27 Dec 2006|05:34pm] |
it's too much about the countries. the announcers generally don't tell you who the driver is, which is annoying and also a shame, as the drivers don't get enough credit. it's also hard to follow who is running each race, as each country essentially runs the racing version of musical chairs.
i also don't like the fact that they potentially compete against Champ Car, especially since Champ Car will run a race in December next year. A1GP runs what is essentially an old Champ Car, so it's interesting to see what people like Neel Jani of Switzerland and Lebanon's Graham Rahal do, considering the rumours of their appearance in Champ Car next year.
i suspect that A1GP hasn't gotten much credit in the racing world, either. i hear they have sponsorship issues, but really outside of F1 in open wheel, who doesn't?
so, simple solution: tell me who the driver is, more often.

or, a good name does not a good beer make.
this beer had two things going for it: the name, and the fact that it is a porter, my favorite beer style.
unfortunately, the flavor was lacking. i even waited a bit until it warmed up to issue my final judgment, but it was the same. overall, this British beer was very flat. not recommended.
Bottle conditioned, 6% ABV, from Ridgeway Brewing, Oxfordshire, Great Britain.
